Es Cau – Excellent food & atmosphere in Cadaques

Situated right on the beachfront in lovely Cadaques, this restaurant could very easily be mistaken for one of those expensive and crappy tourist traps. But it is far from that. Perhaps it is because it is at the end of the boardwalk, or perhaps it is because it has been there for ages, but I am guessing it is because it is run by enthusiastic and friendly people with passion for good food who managed to hire an excellent chef.

The restaurant was full outside when we tried to sit down for lunch, but we didn´t mind sitting inside on rustic benches with soft and wonderful pillows. The staff is all friendly and smiling, and the service good and quick (even if they don´t all understand English very well – which I never anticipate or take for granted anywhere).

We started out with some homemade chips with dip and beer. Whenever we asked for local beer in Cadaques, we always got Estrella. It is a Catalonian beer, and I guess that is as local as it gets for them. We tried some of their tapas dishes like the lovely Iberico ham, mushroom canneloni and goat chees on toast with grilled pepper. All excellent. But I have to say that their burgers on homemade bread with glazed onions and other various supplements was the highlight of the visit. Good for both kids and parents! If you are in the hood, you should try it. Even the coffee is good here!
